Context : I am a 25 year old female for context. I am navigating a challenging breakup and I have a lot of internal debate and conflict on what to do next in my life and also what to do next regarding my ex. The person I was dating I believe is a direct reflection of myself, he denies the truth and doesn't take accountability for his actions, which is something I have also done in the past.
For more context, before falling asleep and having that dream, I was on my back and had a fast flash of an image of a knife going through my stomach, as in a c-section I believe.
The Dream itself : In my dream, there was a doctor, he was asian (I am white btw, I think its because I was watching anime scenes the day before about various subjects) anyways, he admitted to being narcissistic, but in the way of helping others. (A fact about me, I believe in the law of one and I have no hate towards people that are "narcissistic"/"sociopathic"/"psychopathic" I have love for all.) anyways. I then made some jokes to challenge him and push him a little bit to see how he would react. I acted in a way that I was not scared of him. He reacted in the way of being absolutely silent and completely ignoring me and kind of retrieving in himself. Later on, we were on boats on the water and I gave birth, then I saw someone next to me give birth, and then I actually started to feel light headed and I realized only now that I was giving birth.
The doctor then treated me with kindness when I felt so light headed, I was falling towards the front, and his hand was just holding me, in silence. He then started to rub my lower back and was treating me with such kindness, all in silence. I started to feel a contraction coming and I woke up.
My analysis : He had the opportunity to be evil, but chose to be kind instead, even when I was mean to him. Why can't everyone be like that? Why can't my ex be like that...

BACKGROUND
Head Coach: Mike Norris
Formerly an assistant coach for the Thorns, Mike Norris took over the team in January of this year following the resignation of last year’s head coach, Rhian Wilkinson who stepped down after only one season. Her resignation came after a joint investigation by the NWSL & NWSLPA regarding a relationship developing with a current player on the team. While the investigation found Wilkinson did not violate league policies, Wilkinson left the team after player urging, regarding the broken trust between the players and Wilkinson, the legitimacy of the reporting/investigation process of the team/league, and potential retaliation amongst other issues.
Norris joined PTFC in 2022 as an assistant head coach under Wilkinson. Most recently, Norris was the goalkeepers coach for the current Olympic champions, the Canadian Women’s National Team, but Norris’s assistant coaching background in women’s soccer is extensive. After starting his coaching career in youth soccer, he quickly moved up through Canadian youth’s national system up to the senior team over the span of 8 years. Most importantly, Norris was hired with the backing of the current players. Expectations are high for Norris. The Thorns are coming off their third championship season with sights set on a repeat performance.
Technical Director: Karina LeBlanc - General Manager
Karina LeBlanc took over the role of General Manager in November of 2021 following a 3 year stint as CONCACAF’s Head of Women’s Soccer. The newly dedicated role in the Thorns' organization came after a separation between the Thorns management from their brother club Portland Timbers FC stemming from the fall out of the 2021 abuse scandal of the league. LeBlanc, a Canadian national team Hall of Famer, was immediately thrown into the mix, managing to make a splash with her first two trades within her first month, securing a substantial amount of allocation money and expansion draft protection. Unfortunately, LeBlanc stumbled a bit in her first NWSL draft, using her first pick on a player that was never signed by the club (due to transphobic/anti-LGBTQ+ social media posts). In just over a year, LeBlanc appears to be a breath of fresh air in the recent tumultuous years of the club. Just like head coach Mike Norris, there are high expectations for LeBlanc (honestly though, not protecting a known abuser would instantly shoot LeBlanc up to the best GM in Thorns history).
Captain: Chrstine Sinclair
Synonymous with Portland women’s soccer and needing no introduction, the Canadian GOAT Christine Sinclair has been the Thorn’s captain since the start of the league in 2013. While several players have worn the armband in Sinc’s absence, the captaincy is Sinc’s and truly Sinc’s alone.
Stadium: Providence Park, Soccer City, USA
Arguably one of the most iconic professional soccer stadiums in the US, Providence Park has played host to the Thorns since they joined the league in 2013. Located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood in Southwest Portland, the recently renovated stadium is home to both PTFC teams and can host over 25,000 fans.
Ownership: To Be Determined
I am not going to waste time talking about the Thorns' current owner; in no way does he deserve any more publicity and in mine, and I’m sure many others’ opinion, should not be allowed to own a club in the league. Thankfully, in December of 2022, it was announced the Thorns would be up for sale. While this could potentially hinder both the Thorns & Timbers’ mantra of “Two Teams, One Club”, the future is bright for the Thorns. Right after the announcement of the sale, it was reported that an all-women investment group led by Nike executive Melanie Strong was looking to submit a bid with a valuation of $60 million.
Mascot: N/A
While there is no mascot for the club, the prominence of roses can be seen throughout the club, including on merch, within the supporters section, and even awarded to players after home matches.
Kits: We’ve Got Some Mixed Opinions
The Thorns have had some really great kits in past years. However, the kits unveiled in 2022 really missed the mark. One comment pointed out that the 2022 kits looked as if someone took the 2021 kits and remade them in MS Paint. Switching to black kits the previous year, Portland’s primary kits kept with the theme of a black base with the inclusion of red vines/thorns. A nice little easter egg, the acronym dear to the PTFC supporters, BAON, is included within the neck tag (a feature added to the kits starting in 2020).
The secondary kits didn’t fare much better. The club kept with the primary colors of white and red, but other than that, not much else can be said about them.
2023 brings about a fun new kit for our Ed Hardy fans out there (at least we can say they didn’t play it safe???). The Thorns wanted to go bold and that they did. With an updated logo on the shorts, they definitely stand out.
Supporters Groups: The Rose City Riveters
Housed in the North End of Providence Park, the Rose City Riveters are a wild bunch of supporters. You can check out their Instagram or Twitter. The group provides plenty of volunteer opportunities, charity drives, and are never shy in supporting what they believe in. The Riveters are loud and proud (NSFW - language), creating one of the best sporting environments in the league. Very biased, but they also create some of the best TIFOs and banners; since I love a good TIFO/banner, here are few of my recent favorites:

2022 Season Review
Three Stars!!! ⭐⭐⭐
The Portland Thorns were your 2022 NWSL League Champions! As any other season in Portland, the Thorns came in with high expectations following their Shield win in 2021, but their upset loss in the semi-finals to Chicago. Portland went into the pre-season Challenge cup in the West Division finishing 3-1-2, but missed out on advancing to the knockout stage to defend their Challenge Cup championship. The Thorns started off the regular season a little sluggish, going 1-3-1 in their first five games, falling all the way to 7th in the standings. Thankfully, they quickly hit their stride, going on a 10 game unbeaten streak. Following back to back thrashings from NCC & SD, the Thorns went on to not drop a match for the rest of the season. They ended the season with a record of 10-9-3 and a goal differential of +25! The race for the shield at the end of the season was wild, with Portland being in control of their own destiny, but couldn’t get it done, ultimately falling short by 1 point to OL Reign.
Focusing on the on-field storylines, there is one name that was the star of the show: Sophia Smith. Coming into her 3rd season in the league, Smith took off (for club and country)! Racking up 14 goals with 3 assists which lead to 3 Player of the Week nominations (1 win), a Player of the Month award, 2nd in the race for the Golden Boot, NWSL Championship Game MVP, and ultimately being crowned the 2022 NWSL MVP. Nothing could stop Sophia Smith last season and hopefully this is just the beginning for her.
Smith was not the only Thorns player to really step it up this year. Continuing on with the nickname of Goalkeeper FC (shout out the magical Thorns GKer coach Nadine Angerer), starting goalkeeper Bella Bixby tied for the most clean sheets in the league with 9 (10 if you include the playoffs). Rookie Sam Coffey made an immediate impact in the midfield, switching to a DM position and being an anchor our midfield needed. The Thorns also had 1 iron woman in 2022, defender Kelli Hubly who really solidified her starting role going forward (over an injured Emily Menges). Last, but not least, one of the biggest stories of the season: the return of Crystal Dunn! After giving birth to her very adorable son Marcel in May, Dunn returned to the pitch less than 4 months later. And who could forget Dunn’s game winner to send Portland to the championship?

It’s going to be an interesting discussion to see how Norris handles where Sinclair goes. While I respect the Canadian GOAT, I believe Sinc would be best used as a super sub. Depending how Norris handles where Sinclair goes, there is going to be some variation within our midfield & forwards group. Predicting Sinc remaining in our starting line up, I would expect to see some form of our starting XI looking something like:

Something to Prove

Kelli Hubly (D) - Being the Thorns only iron woman is a feat in itself, but until the 2021 season, Hubly hadn’t been a consistent starter. With an aging backline, it will be seen if Hubly can continue on the upward trajectory in being that anchor of our backline
Sam Coffey (M) - Year 1 for Coffey went about as good as one could wish for. Like Hubly, Coffey’s “prove it” is if she can continue to be as good as she was last year, proving that year 1 wasn’t just a fluke (I don’t think anyone thinks this is the case though). If she isn’t called in for the World Cup (a long shot at making it at the moment), Coffey is going to be a key piece for the Thorns.
Olivia Moultrie (M) - The Child. (Can we even call her that anymore?). Moultrie & co. fought hard to allow her to play for the Thorns which led to massive changes in how the league handles U18 players. That said, Moultrie hasn’t really consistently shown that she’s as good as they said she was. A lot of it is due to playing time, it came sporadically and at times, playing only the last few minutes of the match. However, Moultrie has shown flashes of brilliance when she was in. She’s not afraid to be physical and she has the confidence to take her shot.
Christine Sinclaire (M) - Does Sinc really have to prove anything at this point in her career? No. However, we are unfortunately heading towards the end of Sinc’s career here. The big question is, how will she handle it? This will be Portland’s 3rd coach in 3 years and while the Thorns are far from rebuilding, it is yet to be seen where Sinc will fall in Norris’s game planning. However it shakes out to be, I have a feeling we will see Sinc be what Sinc always is, the GOAT.

Out for the season
~~So far, Portland is looking good as far as the SEI list (knock on wood).~~ Jinxed myself on this one. Unfortunately, Janine Beckie went down in the preseason friendly against the U23 NT with an ACL tear. The biggest missing piece will once again be Lindsey Horan. Leaving at the start of last season, Horan left big shoes to fill. She will continue to be out until at least June (the end of her loan), but we most likely won’t see her return until after the World Cup. Fortunately for the Thorns, they do not lack depth in their midfield.
2023 PREVIEW
Realistic Best Case Scenario: 1st Place
The Thorns are returning almost the entirety of their championship team. And while they do have a new coach, Norris was there during the Thorns’ championship run. Expectations for the club will be higher than ever with the possibility of the Thorns going back to back a very realistic goal.
Realistic Worst Case Scenario: 5-7th place
The league is only getting better. While the Thorns did not lose any key players, many clubs right below them gained quite a few. Five different clubs were all within 4 points of each other at the end of the season. The 3 teams right below Portland were San Diego, Houston, and Kansas City. I won’t repeat what’s already been said in these write ups about those 3 teams, but the Thorns could’ve easily been 5th last year as they could’ve been 1st. Looking further back, you have a team like ACFC who should be returning many injured starters and could easily project themselves forward in the standings. The World Cup is going to be especially hard on the Thorns who will look to have ~7 players out which includes 5 potential starters. I don’t expect to see Portland drop out of the playoff picture, but the middle to back half of the season could get very interesting.
Realistic Most Probable Scenario: 2nd-4th
While the Thorns didn’t make any flashy trades or free agent signings, they stuck with what they know worked. Sophia Smith really hit her stride last year and is going to be looked upon to continue her dominance this year. The return of Lindsey Horan (if healthy) in the back half should really give us a push late into the season. Portland returns a team of veterans that know what it takes to win. Can they repeat the success of their 2022 season? We’re going to have to find out.

my golden retriever puppy (15-16 weeks) has suddenly become fearful of things she’s seen every day of her life. like this morning she was nervous about a chair! it started a couple days ago when i noticed after she knocked the vacuum over, causing it to turn on, she became quite fearful— she’s knocked many things over and seen things fall and never had an issue.
she’s always been confident and friendly and curious, and we’ve been socializing her in a stroller since she was 9 weeks old. her breeder also did temperament testing, which she scored well on, and he had already began controlled socializing/exposure with her. this pup has been to gun ranges, parades, festivals, crowds, etc. and has never shown an ounce of fear. i’ve actually never seen her afraid before now.
her parents and grandparents were sport and service dogs, so i can’t see the fear being genetic… but still. i’m so very worried she’s going to be a fearful dog now. she was going to be my service dog, so it’s pretty important she’s comfortable and confident in every environment.
she is having a rough time with teething, which seemed to start around the time the fear did. she’s been fatigued and her gums are swollen :( so poor girl must be in a bit of pain as well.

2023.03.22 16:50 WreckageHothHead Flaws/insufficiencies in RLM's spacewar commentary: paaaaart 1(?)

So just for a bit of context here, I recently rewatched Mauler's "TFA critique", and while it contains a whole lot of precise analysis that I couldn't really find any problems with, his utter obliviousness to the huge amount of logical/continuity problems in ANH (incl. the almost identical ones in the "corresponding" plot points!), which he repeatedly brings up throughout his review while praising its plot as logically consistent where everything makes sense and every event/action are justified / in line with the characters' characterizations (with I think the sole exception of Motti starting out as ignorant of Vader's powers; and something about how bad the Stormtroopers were while showing exclusively Endor footage), made me go on an autistic multi-(for-now-7-)part rant on the Mauler sub going through most of the major logical issues found throughout ANH and ESB.
The ANH ones have some overlap with Plinkett's audio commentary, but also contain lots of points either not brought up there at all, or expanded versions of some of the points that Plinkett touches on.

So naturally being on a bit of an inertia from this, I thought I'd go over here and also highlight various problems I've found with RLM's spacewars coverage in various places;
in this thread just 1 relatively small point, and if I end up posting others, probably also just few points at a time (to prevent long OPs or whatever):

But really, a space station the size of a small moon? And they just happened to get pulled into the exact hangar bay which is located right near all the things that they need to get to.
But they do get back to the Millennium Falcon on foot, right? Like right after when they rescue Princess Leia and get all showered up; so the prisoner room and the garbage dump that's like one floor below it - is like right near where the hangar bay is?
Same with all 7 power reactor control things that shut off power to the main tractor beam...
Why is this Death Star so big again?
Oh right, the giant space laser. Ah, whatever...

The Death Star is silly and nonsensical; each set is designed for the purpose of the movie's needs:
The prisoner cell block only has one way out; which is great by the way, in case a crazed prisoner escapes and corners a guard?
There are giant steel doors everywhere, that close to block off hallways - utterly pointless, except it's neat to have Han and Chewie jump through a door as it's closing while they're being chased by Stormtroopers.
"Open the blast doors! Open the blast doors!"
I guess they're blast doors...
What are they blasting against? [...]
I guess they're like watertight bulkhead doors? - like on the Titanic? You know, in case the Death Star hits an iceberg.
And then you got the extendable and retractable bridge over the cavernous pit; this serves no purpose? - unless we want a scene where Luke has to swing across the pit heroically with Leia.
And don't even get me started on the fact that there are no railings anywhere on any of the [?] walkways, that go above endless pits to nowhere...
It's all very stark, and abstract, and science-fictiony stuff.
I guess the Empire's so confident in its efficiency, that it doesn't need shit like safety railings - they've been accident free for over three years now!

Now you might be saying to yourself, well, I did complain about the Theed power room, right?
But I never really complained about the look of the Theed power room - or the fact that they didn't have no railings either!
And they have these silly rotating force field doors, that led to a little room with a pit in it for no reason...
It was like that little Keymaker guy from the Matrix sequels showed up - and he opened up the door to a completely different fucking world.
I guess George wanted them to have a fight scene on a Star Wars looking set, or something that looked like the Death Star kind of environment? - but he couldn't get them onto one storywise, so he just said that there would be one underneath this old quaint city.
You see we need some kind of connection to reality?, and as absurd as a planet-sized space station with a giant laser is - it's still much more believable than the fact that Naboo has a gigantic power generator under its city;
accessible through doors in some kind of hangar bay for some reason.
And it's like underneath the main palace? And not like a 100 miles away in the middle of nowhere.
It's like having a nuclear powerplant under the White House - not necessarily the greatest idea....

If I owned a nuclear powerplant, I'd probably go and touch the Uranium rods. I'd rub my face against them.. in hopes that I would get superpowers and be able to shoot laser out of my eyes... But I'd probably just get horrible cancer.
You know, I got something to admit - I got cancer once? But I was cured of it... Because you see, once the cancer cells saw what I did in my basement at night? - they all killed themselves. They said they didn't wanna bring their children into a world such as mine.

This of course being an expanded version of a point that touched briefs in the Ep1 review:

Oh, and then they go from the palace to this room, what is this room? Is this in the palace??
I mean I know George wanted the Jedis to fight in a cool place that's really Star Warsy? - so.. so what this is like a power generator? What does it power, the Universe??
So you're expecting me to believe that the people that built this technological wonder were dying without space supplies for 2 days??

One additional plot hole I seem to have found here (at least haven't seen anyone else mention it) is that at the beginning of Ep1, the hangar with the ships quite certainly was not in the palace (the Queen's group looked like it had walked quite a distance away from the palace before the 2 Jedi freed them - and then Panaka's like "the hangar, this way" and next second they're at the hangar; no way they made the whole trip back to the palace during that cut?) - however at the end, they enter the palace via the hangar.
Either way this aside, while the comparison in that commentary section is accurate, the big problem here is that a much closer and more natural comparison to what happens here with the Theed hangar->"powerplant", is not the Death Star here, but rather the Bespin duel - and Plinkett doesn't make that obvious comparison anywhere.
As an environment, Bespin is a direct predecessor to mainly Coruscant (i.e. the exterior) as well as to a lesser extent the Naboo capital - its interior doesn't directly look like the Palace (if anything that one's much more comparable to the Yavin throne room), however it's an exotic, idyllic and embellished, arguably "aristocratic" looking environment built right next to the hellish looking carbon freezing chamber, a junkyard featuring a conveyor belt leading into an inferno, and probably other industrial areas;
this in itself is not yet "unjustified" in any way - Cloud City is a "gas mining colony" after all, and as James Cameron is well aware, smoke-filled metallic industrial environments already have an inherent tendency to look like Hell on Earth and serve as a perfect setting for climactic showdowns against creepy villains and monsters.
However Han's group never visits Lando's moody looking industrial facilities before being taken there by Vader - so from their perspective, and the way it's conveyed in the movie (starting even with the room Threepio initially enters), these industrial and engine rooms represent the "evil underbelly" of Cloud City, hidden beneath and inbetween the picturesque city and the soothing bright hallways that serve as a "front" for this hidden truth;
even the gnome-like aliens first found by Chewie in that junkyard, and later seen participating in in the carbon freezing procedure, while literally just being industrial workers there, come off as malicious, almost demon-like creatures who're seemingly exclusively found in these grim underbelly rooms.
Then, even though it's reasonable to expect a city with a police force to feature prisons and detention centers, the one that Chewbacca gets locked in has an emphatically grim and evil look to it - a complete contrast to the public areas.
That's not what the Enterprise's detention cells look like?
Moments later, Han is strapped into a torture contraption, in a similar room with a dark red ceiling - one might assume the Empire brought the torture equipment with them, but really this place increasingly starts looking like an evil Imperial fortress rather than a benign, idyllic city built around some factories.
And if the initial scenes inside the freezing chamber didn't outright confirm that this place exists right "next" to the bright hallways, then certainly that's exactly how it turns out to be when Luke arrives and is lured into this trap - one moment he's in the white hallway, the next he enters a door and is pulled into the hell room with Vader.
Plinkett's "Keymaker from the Matrix" comparison becomes more and more applicable here - even though the believability isn't stretched as much yet, since why shouldn't there be quick and easy access to the industrial/engine rooms from the public hallways?
And the Empire just happens to be using this room, since Vader wants to use this otherwise normal industrial facility to freeze Luke so he doesn't try to escape during the trip to the Emperor... or something.
However as Luke starts following after Vader after pushing him off the platform, and walks through a creepy tunnel into what seems like a level of control rooms connected by darkly lit hallways, the place becomes hard to distinguish from some of the interiors of the Death Star - especially the Emperor's throne room from the 2nd one;
and then Luke is blown out a window that looks like a spider web (not quite unlike the one seen behind the Emperor's throne in the next film), into a vast, round bottomless pit with walls that look like the surface of the Death Star.
Sure - if that long shaft emerging from underneath the city and reaching down into the clouds (possibly connected to the "gas mining" somehow) were to be hollow inside, then it would look like a gaping bottomless pit - but why does its wall have to look like the Death Star's surface? And also evoke the bottomless pit that was surrounding the tractor beam controls for some reason?
So at this point, Luke and Vader have gotten from a smoky industrial facility that you would expect from an industrial city like this, to what looks indistinguishable from the interior of an evil Imperial station or fortress - even though these interiors have been here for years, way before the Empire arrived here a few days ago, and effectively made it into its temporary evil space station fortress;
they hardly could've revamped the design of all these rooms and chasms during the short time they've been staying here, to make them look like an Imperial base instead?
Really by all looks, these levels beneath the carbon freezing facility, as well as those "prison rooms" from before, look like this for no other reason than that the Bespin city functions as a honey-trap Imperial fortress in this film;
and as the duel starts protruding into the increasingly Deathstarish looking environment, it seems like dream logic starts completely taking over any pretenses the environment initially had of "making sense in-universe":

each set is designed for the purpose of the movie's needs:

What's happening on a small and not even anywhere as immediately noticeable scale in Ep4's Deathstar, is taking place on a much larger scale here - the environments are designed according to the needs of the film, as well as to reflect the meaning of what's happening in the story as well as the protagonist's mental state:
the "control room level" looks like an Imperial fortress because it's functioning as one here, and exists as a representation of the dark place (morally and mentally) Vader is trying to lure him into; and the claustrophobic hallways, spider window and gaping chasm reflect and intensify Luke's bleak states of mind during those respective moments - the unfamiliarity of the environment reflects the hidden knowledge that he's about to discover, the hallways and thin bridge intensify his "trapped in a deadly situation" situation, and hovering above a gaping pit into nothingness is seemingly how he feels about having learned what he just learned: that his entire aspiration to go after his father, and what his trusted mentors had been telling him, were all lies, and he seemingly has way to escape the "dark abyss" that Vader is trying to pull him in (ironically the literal dark abyss is what he jumps into to escape it - having changed into representing the preferable nature of death/uncertainty to what Vader is offering him).
So how does this all compare to the Ep1 counterpart?

You see we need some kind of connection to reality?, and as absurd as a planet-sized space station with a giant laser is - it's still much more believable than the fact that Naboo has a gigantic power generator under its city;
accessible through doors in some kind of hangar bay for some reason.
And it's like underneath the main palace? And not like a 100 miles away in the middle of nowhere.
It's like having a nuclear powerplant under the White House - not necessarily the greatest idea....

To get this one thing right out of the way out of the bat, there is no indication of those power beams or anything else in this place somehow being hazardous like the fissile radiant material in nuclear powerplants - so at least there's that.
However the believability is certainly stretched a lot farther here than anything in Bespin - for one, Theed is not a relatively small city built around an industrial function, it's just a regular royal capital; so unless the Naboo culture has some kind of "the kings are also the producers of goods" thing going on, this "power plant" being right in the palace building seems like a non-sequitur;
being next to the fighter jet hangar might make a slight bit more sense, but still not really at all - plus the hangar's in the palace now, unlike the start of the film.
Another big difference here is that the "powerplant" area is not just extending downwards into bottomless chasms, but also upwards towards the unseen ceiling - and one might ask oneself whether the buildings seen from outside were really high enough to contain that massive area, although the Palace (despite not being a skyscraper) just might.
And also while there's nothing inherently absurd about underground levels, or a round bottomless pit leading underground, the latter hadn't been set up by an exterior shot of the station, with the "bottomless pit" axis growing out of the flying saucer's lower half and reaching into the clouds/gas below (in what had been established as a "gas mining facility") - this time all that stuff is literally coming out of nowhere.
However ultimately what really doesn't make sense, analogously to the Bespin "control rooms levels" beneath the freezing chamber, is it looking like an evil Imperial fortress - Naboo isn't an evil fortress, so why would it have an evil looking interior like this?
However, a major difference here is that while the Empire had only occupied Bespin for a short while, was intent on leaving again (unless Lando refused to cooperate, that is), the Trade Federation has been here for quite a while longer - certainly in "film time" terms it takes up the length of the entire movie, even if the in-universe time that passes between the invasion and the return to Naboo might be ranging between a significantly long period to a few days) - and by all looks they were planning to stay and had some kind of huge sprawling plans in mind that involved the entire planet:

"Is the planet secure?"
"We have taken over the last pockets of primitive life forms - we are in complete control of the planet now."
"Good."

And in this movie, the Trade Federation is a proto-Empire of sorts - not only collaborating with the Sith and led by the literal future Emperor, they also seem to be a dystopian megacorporation of sorts, who've already (unofficially?) taken over significant Republic territory:

"You can't take Her Royal Highness there, the Hutts are gangsters! If they discovered her-"
"...It'd be no different than if we landed on a system controlled by the Federation; except that the Hutts aren't looking for her - which gives us the advantage."
"Your Highness - with your permission, we're heading for a remote planet called Tatooine; it's in a system far beyond the reach of the Trade Federation."

Their ships literally look like mini Death Stars (with Saturn rings around them, to make it slightly less obvious?), and their interior generally looks very Empirey as well.
So, compared to the idea that one might easily think of to try and ground the Bespin look in the universe, namely that "the Empire has started changing this place they're occupying into their evil fortress", such a notion certainly makes a lot more sense in the context of Ep1's plot.
Additionally this is somewhat supported by the visuals of Gunray riding around on a crab-throne while in a darkly lit looking Palace interior at night - even if only in this scene here:

"Your Queen is lost, your people are starving... and you, Governor, are going to die much sooner than your people, I'm afraid."

This also conveys some kind of notion of "them remaking the place into their own", even if technically it's just a creepy looking robot chair and this scene (along with the later Sidious scene where they tell him they've taken over those primitive lifeforms) happens to take place at night.
Ultimately though, even if making more sense than Bespin by comparison, it's still a heavy stretch on rational world believability - and, of course, there's no direct hints at this actually having physically taken place there.
Similarly to ESB, this duel starts with the villain getting in the heroes' way as they're there for a different mission (having waited for them from behind a closed door as well), and at least partially showing signs of following a plan to lure them into increasingly dangerous environments:
Maul arbitrarily opens the gate to the space room and leads the fight there - then he backflips onto a bridge even further away from the hangar, and is subsequently seen stepping back from Qui-Gon all up until ending up in that corridor with the red force fields, and eventually the sealed room with the gaping pit:
where he immediately reveals to have been pretending to be retreating from Qui-Gon and turns around at him the moment the force fields reactivate again.
So, just like with Bespin, there's a surreal, dream logic element here that extends and reflects the literal premise of the villain luring the heroes into a trap - the environments he's leading them into look like an evil fortress, evoke power, awe and danger, and feature both claustrophobic small rooms/corridors to make the protagonists feel trapped, as well as gaping pits and chasms showing just how deep they can fall into uncertainty and death, in what's getting brewed up by the villains here;
and analogously to Luke in Cloud City, while the 2 Jedi aren't literally "surprised" by this environment hiding behind the door of a benign looking palace (which can be attributed to it either making sense to them in terms of how real-world logic, or their reduced lucidity), it's a place they haven't been showing seeing at any earlier point, and reflects the much vaster scope of what's going on here (i.e. the Sith plan to take over the world) that's hidden from them, is shrouded by secret, and that they're only going to proceed to uncover gradually.

"There is something else behind all this, your Highness - there's no logic in the Federation's move here. My feelings tell me they will destroy you."

Unlike ESB this isn't something that they learn the full truth of in an instant, without any direct hints preceding it - with the possible exception of this:

"I cannot teach him; the boy has no patience."
"He will learn patience."
"Much anger in him - like his father."
"Was I any different when you taught me?"

Effectively, or if explicitly going with a "dream logic" reading of these movies, according to which places, characters, circumstances and hidden schemes pop into the universe's existence the moment they're imagined by the author / enter the narrative, both these environments materialize inside these buildings out of nowhere to reflect and enhance the mental states of the protagonists, the villainous intents and schemes, and the meaning of what's happening in the story;
just like, albeit on a much smaller scale, all those Death Star parts only materialized in front of the heroes in order to give them new dangers and obstacles to overcome - incl. the garbage chute beneath a latticed hole right in the prison corridor, the monster that made itself known right as someone said "could be worse", and the walls that started closing in on them right after the monster disappears.

Then she shoots a vent on the floor and somehow knows that it's a garbage chute... HOW'D SHE KNOW THAT?
And why would a garbage chute be grated like that? Usually that's just like a air vent or somethin'...
It could've led to a dead end, where they all got stuck somewhere...
Or it coulda let straight to a garbage incinerator - nobody knows what that is? So their idea is to jump in it?..
I guess it's better than nothing? I guess you're fucked one way or the other...
But shit I wouldn't follow her in there, I'd surrender...

However, exclusively comparing these ANH examples to the Theed spaceroom without mentioning the much more similar Bespin spaceroom, amounts to a very incomplete comparison - and the accompanying conclusion that:

You see we need some kind of connection to reality?, and as absurd as a planet-sized space station with a giant laser is - it's still much more believable than the fact that Naboo has a gigantic power generator under its city;

and that this warrants "complaining" about:

Now you might be saying to yourself, well, I did complain about the Theed power room, right?
But I never really complained about the look of the Theed power room - or the fact that they didn't have no railings either!

leads to the question whether Plinkett/Mike/Rich/etc. are aware of Empire engaging in a very similar (in fact directly analogous) and comparable display of environment surrealism, with "the Keymaker opening a portal into an evil dimension", and stretching this "connection to reality" a whole lot further and more noticeably than those Death Star scenes (with the garbage chute itself standing out among them all, in turn);

This trash compactor scene is really a lot of fun;
but it always felt like a "give them something to do" kind of scene, in a movie where nearly every scene is motivated.
It's one of those "lowest point" kinda moments, where our heroes struggle against opposition - but it doesn't really serve an overall purpose in the storyline.
It's fun, and tense, and memorable, don't get me wrong - but from a story perspective it doesn't advance the plot too much...
The plot here being that the bad guys wanna blow up the Rebel base - and Han; Luke; Chewbacca; and the useless complaining woman need to stop them.
Having them tied up in the garbage compactor only to escape and go right back to where they were? - eh, it was a little unnecessary roadblock in this series of events.

; and how exactly this fits in with their high appraisal of that movie:

Plinkett: The Star Wars Awakens
He accomplished his task of creating a sci-fi film about the Hero’s Journey; and then had to live under the shadow of “The Empire Strikes Back” – one of the greatest films ever made for which he had the least to do with creatively;
he desperately needed Star Wars to be about something bigger and greater than just popcorn entertainment - so he went back to his classic literature book and his CliffsNotes to search for ideas.

So at this point as we're wrapping up, you're saying to yourself: "Why does this guy get so worked up over Star Wars - these are films for babies! They're just made for 5 year olds that like to play with toys."
Well - I don't find that entirely true; and I don't think that's all this could've been.
This is more about achieving greatness; and those that make excuses for greatness when it falls horribly short.
In "Empire Strikes Back", the filmmakers took the material from the 1st Star Wars, and brought it up to the next level.
They took a movie with robots, and a floating cloud city, and a rubber green puppet, and made it completely realistic and believable;

This ANH-ESB comparison and how the latter "took it to the next level" including on the "realism" front, seems to ignore how much it turned up the gears on the surrealism and dream logic when compared to those Death Star scenes - particularly in that very same "floating cloud city" mentioned in this quote.

it's a very dark movie that's brilliantly done in every aspect - filled with heavy emotion, stark realism, and beautiful visuals.
For a brief moment, "The Empire Strikes Back" showed us what could really be done with these movies and characters.
I think people have a hard time differentiating between movies that are made for children, - and movies that children can also enjoy.
If you're any age, "Empire" can speak to you on some level; "The Phantom Menace" caps out at about age 10 - unless you're a drooling fanboy that just loves lightsabers.
And saying that "The Phantom Menace" is really "just a film for children" - is code speak for it sucking.

Even if a reasonable comparison between these analogous sections of ESB and TPM would lead to the conclusion that the former is surrealist art kino while the latter is nonsense that disconnects you from reality; that the former is "one of the greatest films ever made" while the latter "sucks" (incl. at the example of this particular comparison) - they haven't yet made such a comparison or analysis, it's missing from their thesis;
and judging by them praising ESB and its floating cloud city as "starkly realistic", as well as leaving all of this out of their Death Star / Theed comparison, strongly suggests that they haven't ever thought of any these points, and are severely overestimating the amount of rational sense-making that EpV is built on.
However unlike MauLer, who has a particularly severe case of this misconception not just about Ep5, but Ep4 as well (see his TFA review and my Mauler threads from this post's opening), and is trying to apply this rationalist approach (which he equates with "objective quality") to all movies he encounters - at least from what I've seen so far - RLM are clearly generally aware of non-rational approach to plotwriting and filmmaking:
See the Suspiria re:view, as well the somewhat mixed commentary on the evil look of the Event Horizon (also re:view) and how there doesn't seem to be an in-universe justification for its gothic design prior to it falling into the hell dimension - since Sam Neill's character isn't some kinda "hell worshipper cultist" who would construct it in that fashion.

Perci is a skinny male triton with a more feminine form. He has finned ears and long white hair with a shaved side
Carries with him a golden bass guitar in the shape of a bass fish with a red Volerite gem eye. This bass guitar can transform into other instruments that retain the golden scales and gem eye of the guitar (some other instruments include a sitar, hurdy gurdy, and really any other instrument)
Wears round glasses with red lenses
Wears a large ostentatious and colorful shoulderless poncho-like top with tight black pants and brown thigh high boots.
Optionally wears other jewelry and other accessories (artist’s choice)
Personality
Perci is a very outgoing person, giving performances and spectacles when he can cause he loves the attention. While usually he performs to earn adoration and money while on ships of the Exiled Fleet, he does genuinely care for members of the Fleet and Reef affected by the fighting. He does the best he can to make peace with the two sides by performing ballads and stories to heal all, both emotionally and physically.
Backstory
Perci grew up with not much in his life, orphaned off the coast of an abandoned island at a rather young age and left to be raised by local rum runners who used the island as a hiding spot. Here, Perci learned the absolute truth he would come to embody as he grew up, money is everything. After being taught a basic education (for essentially a pirate that is), he quickly found he had a talent for performing, and a love for it as well. As his adopted rum runner family would sell crates and barrels in the islands they stopped at, he would perform in order to earn the crew extra gold, eventually becoming the case the he made more money the the entire smuggling operation combined.
After he built his chops as a musician and a bard, he took off on his own so no one could take a cut of his earnings. Along the way he built his iconic and fairly ostentatious look, crowning it off with a magical gold bass guitar in the shape of a fish, finding it amusing and rumored to bring the owner much more fortune. Along the way, either from the bass he purchased or maybe from dormant skills he had, Perci was able to not only perform magic as he played, but brought the stories he sung to literal life as he conjured spirits and specters to tell large sweeping ballads and operas.
Eventually, Perci landed himself a somewhat stable gig performing for a number of ships for the Exiled Fleet, a rather dour lot but paid extremely well, additionally were somewhat open to the spirit operas Perci would perform since they were more accustom to the sight of ghost thanks to the Harrowing curse. This would go on until one night, the ship Perci was on that he performed earlier in the evening stopped to perform an assault on a Volerite deposit belonging to the Iridescent Reef. Here, he saw what both sides did to each other, seeing the Reef brutally defend from the equally as devastating Fleet, in the name of vanity, possesions…greed. He saw men chopped in half by a crab man’s claw, an Olthix warrior have his head’s shell caved in by a ghostly hammer, and worse of all he saw young blood, younger than even Perci, be spilt and splattered on him as he watched in horror. Passing Fleet ships that flashes of light and fighting from this raid stated, that a wave of vengeful spirits, unlike any seen by the Fleet before, washed over and destroyed the entire ship, with the lone survivor being Perci, using his bass as an oar paddling on a large piece of debris as he was picked up and tended to by Fleet medics.
After going through that horrid experience, Perci made deals with Fleet and Reef groups to perform for them, but only on the grounds that they attend at the same time, enjoy each other’s company and not be at their throats. Perci still performed for money and adoration, but for another reason as well. He wanted to see lives changed and inspired, instead of ended.

Just finished binge watching The Devil Judge and I have so many thoughts that I need to write them down and talk it out with others who have seen it. I know I am “late to the party”, so many have seen this quite some time ago, hope it’s ok to share now with spoilers tagged.
In terms of characters, I really liked Kang Yo-han and Seon-a.
As individual characters they prove to be the most interesting and also layered characters. It might appear very black and white for Seon-a, but once she’s established as a key player, we get glimpses of just how much more there is to her . Their pairing scenes are also filled with emotions, both shown and perceived hidden feelings. Through the show
Also both actors did an amazing job, just pure brilliance in my opinion.
I read a review saying that Kim Min-jung “aegyo” voice was annoying and sort of ruined the character, but I couldn’t disagree more. It made that character even better, to have such a beautiful gentle looking woman be so much more than her looks (again layered). I will never forget the scene where she has a blue ribbon in her hair, just looking like a beautiful Snow White with her Betty Boop lips and showing her emotions.
Ji Sung is absolutely perfect as Kang Yo-Han. He just brought so much more to the table, being able to show vulnerability and also strength. I could not have enough compliments for him, his fight scenes, emotional ones, the way he commanded every scene he showed up in. For me Kim Min-jung and Ji Sung matched each other well on screen, for how powerful they portrayed their characters (even if Ji Sung is slightly superior, for doing it with everyone).
Kim Ga On is a character that is both likable and frustrating. He is likable for his sense of justice and will to do better, but frustrating for how indecisive he becomes and how susceptible to outside influence he was. If he was supposed to be the polar opposite of Kang Yo-Han it falls flat, so I thinl maybe the opposite of Yo-Han is actually Soo-Yun, who has an unwavering sense of justice by the rule of law. . So I do like him but, at the same time, I got frustrated and annoyed for his indecisiveness. He does bring humanity to Kang Yo-Han and plays a pivotal role in the reconnection between niece and uncle. Those scenes (of a family) served as a balm for an otherwise brutal world and show him as kind and loving, bringing to others the love he had as a child.
As for other characters that stood out for me… Overall I liked everyone’s acting. Elijah character was so important, she presented a bridge of understanding between the two male leads and was portrayed beautifully. I really liked her. Also liked K and Judge Oh, Lawyer Ko, Minister Cha Kyung-hee (what an amazing actress).
It also needs to be said that the chemistry between the two male leads was amazing! They really played off each other well and you could tell how they are constantly circling each other and going back and forth in regards to how they trust and support. .
The show is not a BL, that much is clear despite almost every edit you find on tiktok or youtube make it seem like it is. The romance part of the show is between Soo-Hyun and Kim Gaon and we see it early on. However, this romance fell flat for me, which brings me to Soo-Hyun character and how poorly executed I believe it was written.
Soo-Hyun’s character appears to be the polar opposite of Kang Yo-Han with a strong moral compass, which could become a good storyline with her connection to Gaon and even serve as conscience. However, she ends up being (only) a support character for Gaon’s moral issues, without adding much more to the story.
I don’t think the show queerbaits though. They don’t present it as bromance or romance. In fact, Since their chemistry is so good and the tension is very much present in a lot of the scenes (with lots of touches being focused with close ups, longing stares and that ending…), I could fully understand why people will edit or highlight the BL undertones of the show. Did they intend to make it BL or just ambiguous? I read an interview with the scriptwriter where he said that he made Kim Gaon character male in a role that is usually female and, in turn, Soo-Hyun would usually be a male cop. Maybe it’s due to this gender fluidity/switch in the writing that we also get a different energy from the two male leads (Kim Gaon is the female energy to Kang Yo-Hans male lead character).
In terms of plot, I really liked it. It’s a revenge plot, which sometimes could have been better done and you wonder why this or that character died and in such a way, or why they didn’t die, but still loved it.
I don’t think I will rewatch the whole show anytime soon, since there are parts of it that do frustrate me lol Also, don’t think this show needs a season 2. It’s done and dusted, ending like it did is actually perfect
I do want to see both male actors in other shows, but as always I fear comparisons with these characters that I really liked and are still very much lingering in my mind (especially, Ji Sung who acts so well as Kang Yo-Han).
Share your thoughts. I am not a very good writer of reviews, but I just felt so many things after finishing the show and had so many thoughts I needed to share a few of them.
Edit: also!! I got the feeling they made Yohan's character insinuate to be bisexual which for a korean show would be huge!!! He says "I don't discriminate, I treat men and women the same" also "you should know my tastes". These sentences, especially the first one, are said to Seon-a and at first he is gently caressing her when he says it. I found that quite interesting. You can claim he was just saying it in the sense he will hit a woman just as much as a man, but given the full context it doesn't appear (just) that.

2023.03.22 16:05 phillium Debating between two water heaters...

So, we're working on replacing our current one that's been knocking a lot and is from 1988 or so. It's a basic 40 gallon tank model. After reading up on what all's needed for a tankless model (larger gas lines, possible drainage, etc.), and hearing the quotes for those, we decided to do a one-for-one replacement and just go with another 40 gallon tank.
We've got two bids, one that's about $1550 for an AO Smith GCR-40 and one that's around $1700 for a Bradford White RG240T6N. After looking at the prices for the water heater themselves (I realize that's not the price the plumbers would be paying, but could be a good data point for how expensive the machines are relative to each other), the BW looks to cost around $200 more than the AO Smith, meaning the second bid is going for a bit less on the installation cost, but with a pricier machine.
I guess I'm wondering if there's a real advantage to a Bradford White over an AO Smith. The specs for both are nearly spot on, so before we pulled the trigger on the cheaper bid, I wanted to check with you all to see if there's something I overlooked or didn't consider as to why the Bradford White might be worth the cost.
Oh, and I'd read that the Bradford White anode rod is part of the hot water outlet, as in you need to disconnect the hot water pipe to replace the anode rod. How much of a pain is that? I'm not crazy about having to disconnect and reconnect the hot water pipe for a (semi-)regular maintenance.
Thanks in advance for any help. Sorry if it's a bit long, I just want to make sure we get the best bang for the buck. I'm leaning towards the AO Smith, for the price, the regular placement of the anode rod, and the fact that our current water heater that's been around 30+ years is a State machine, which seems to be a brand of AO Smith.

I will recommend a video series that is by none other than Mr. Olympia Dorian Yates. So let's take a look at what this is all about.
What an Amazing Trailer!
The “Shadow” as Dorian was called during his competitive heyday was a term that would invoke fear into the hearts of his competition. It was the 1990’s and Dorian was tearing up the Olympia stage like a true warrior and he wasn’t taking any prisoners. His domination on the platform was truly out of this world because he ushered in a new era of the mass monster. I remember as a teenager the amazing transformation Dorian did back in 1993 and those black and white photographs of him posing in the offseason.

Just looking at those photos still motivates me to this day as they are truly legendary. Now in my opinion Dorian brought together the ultimate physique that will be remembered for decades to come. He packed on slabs of lean dense muscle, but at the same time, he never lost the aesthetic and symmetric proportions that seem to have disappeared within this last decade. He also was known for his conditioning and paper-thin skin. He would come in more dry and peeled than an onion. He was the perfect mix of mass, symmetry, and conditioning. A combination in my opinion, that has yet to be matched to this day.

Dorian has recently released his new training video called “Shadow Warrior” and for all of you who are Dorian fans, it is a must-see. I have seen just about every bodybuilding video produced. Some of them are good, but then you have many that are too predictable following the same format. It consists of bodybuilder X working out then eating a meal. That gets boring pretty fast for even the most simple-minded bodybuilder. I want to give a huge thumbs up to Garry Phillips and Abhijit Chattaraj for producing one of the best bodybuilding films ever! Yes, folks, it’s that good and isn’t something I can say for the other dozen or so bodybuilding films produced every year. I was very impressed not only with the layout of the film but also the direction was superb.

Welcome to Temple Gym
This is not one of your simple hour and half bodybuilding flicks where it’s a back and forth mixes of training and eating and training and eating. It is a hell of a lot more than that and should be a reminder for others producing films to take as an example. It is set on two discs and contains close to 6 hours of amazing footage. The first disc covers the main feature and it was nothing short of amazing. It starts off with Dorian giving us a tour of Temple Gym and welcoming some different pros like Tony Freeman and Dennis Wolf in for a workout.
Dorian also spends time with all his fans that come and visit him no matter how big or small. He is well known to give back to the sport and is always helpful to everyone that comes to Temple Gym. One part I really liked about this is that he included some awesome archive footage from the 1990s. It contained some video footage of photoshoots and guest posing appearances that I have not seen anywhere else. It also covers a lot about his history in the sport from the time he got started as a teenager and his amazing progression over the years to become a 6 time Mr. Olympia. Included on this disc is also his 1996 interview at the Grand Prix. This was something that I never saw before and was very interesting to take a look back at one of his famous interviews.

Now just when you thought it was over think again. Next up is over 2 hours of one of his seminars at Liberty’s nightclub way back in 1990 after his Night of the Champions win. Now for those of you who are into volume training and have never tried his hardcore approach then I suggest you give it a try. In my opinion, for those that complain that they don’t get enough out of this style of training, I believe it’s because you don’t train with the intensity needed to make it work. Let’s be honest most guys that call themselves bodybuilders train with the intensity of a yoga instructor and simply don’t have the balls to destroy the weights with ten percent of what Dorian put into his workouts.

This is why high volume is so popular these days. We all know that Dorian trained like an animal in the gym and for those of you who didn’t see “Blood and Guts” then you don’t know what you are missing. Second many who try this system are not properly educated on how to incorporate it effectively. If you fail at these two most important pillars of this method you are doomed to fail. During this seminar, Dorian covers a treasure chest of training and nutrition knowledge. This info alone could have been a complete DVD and would have provided more useful information than most videos out there.

My favourite part of this video collection is where Dorian takes some top pro bodybuilders and gives them a taste of his style of training. This is kick ass because not only are you learning from him directly in the gym but also watching him punish his clients is worth the price of admission alone. It shows some footage of him training back with Zack Khan before the British Championships.
One quote I really liked is when he punishes them into the ground he mentions how all the weights at Temple Gym are heavier than other gyms. This goes to show that even with advanced pro’s that have been training for 15 to 20 years, Dorian still is teaching them how to maximize muscle contraction and perfect their form. In my opinion, no one in bodybuilding was more critical about proper biomechanics of exercise than Dorian, who looked for every angle to fully decimate the muscle.

A Workout from Hell!
He puts the most renowned writer in bodybuilding history, Ron Harris through one hell of a leg workout. I am sure that workout left him limping in pain for at least a week to come. He also puts Evan Centropani through a back workout that is truly legendary. But the most inspiring part is his training sessions with Chris Cormier. As Chris mentioned, he’s been training for 30 years and the intensity of Dorian’s workouts are off the charts. Dorian puts him through a leg workout that will stay etched in Chris’ frontal lobe for the rest of his life.
Pain and Suffering To Create a Champion!
Dorian punishes him on a gauntlet of exercise all the while training like a beast himself. But the hack squats at the end of his workout leaves Chris on the verge of an out of body experience. Chris was suffering in pain and was swearing more than someone with Tourette’s. He stumbles up the gym stairs to lie in the dirty alley outside to multiple episodes of dry heaving and vomiting. Dorian brings him some water and tells him to get up because he’s making the place look untidy. This is classic footage of the reality of Dorian’s training sessions on one of the sport’s most experienced pro bodybuilders. It finishes off with a major photo collection of Dorian from his early training days and competitions all the way to the Olympia stage.

It has tons of valuable educational information that you can apply to your training and nutrition program.
