2023.03.22 16:29 Puzzleheaded_Yam3058 A few tips to help with the job search
I wanted to make this post to help those who are currently looking for either J1 or additional Js. Yes, there is an economic downturn but there are still opportunities out there. You just have to approach it slightly differently. For reference, I was made redundant (laid off) from J1 back in January. I was terrified about going into the job market because I don't have a lot of experience (3 years post college) and I had been rejected from several jobs during the last quarter of 2022. So my confidence wasn't great. However, between February and March, I interviewed seven times and received six offers. I also have two more interviews lined up for next week which look very promising. My future J1 has offered me nearly double the salary of my previous J1, along with a much better benefits package, and is in a completely different industry doing a very different role. My current industries/roles are split across governance, administration, finance and higher education. So here are some tips that really helped me in my job search:
- Understand that you might have to be more proactive in your search. If you are used to having recruiters breaking your door down, this might come as a shock. But if you want to find those golden goose opportunities, it is going to take a little to a lot more work than previous times. If you are solely relying on recruiters, you are going to be very disappointed. Use recruiters where and when you can but keep actively looking for roles on your own. At the height of my job search, I was checking prominent job boards within my industries (not Indeed or LinkedIn) multiple times a day, filtering by remote and date posted (more on that below).
- Don't be put off by the number of applicants stated on sites like Indeed or LinkedIn. I have seen people say they don't bother applying to jobs that have a high number of applicants, but the number of applicants does not tell you anything about the number of applicants who are actually qualified and put in a good application. I would guess that around 95% of applications to all positions are terrible. Having worked in recruitment before, it's easier than you think to stand out because so many applications are just awful. Not to mention, not everyone who is applying for the role actually wants the job. Some people apply for roles because they have to keep their benefits. Or they are just a complete chancer. If you have the skills and experience listed, you have a decent chance of getting to interview. Which leads to my next point.
- Cover letters. I know cover letters are like a swear word on this subreddit, but unless your skillset/resume is in extremely high demand, cover letters can be a great way of standing out simply because most people don't bother to write one. The need for a cover letter also depends on the industry. I have never applied to a job without a cover letter because my industries require one. If I want to have a decent paying job, there's no getting around providing a cover letter. Thankfully, ChatGPT makes writing cover letters a breeze. Just input the job description and it will provide you with a nice template to work from. I have always received an interview whenever I have used ChatGPT to write the cover letter. I always make sure to edit the letter to make it more personal, but it has saved me a lot of time and brought much success. If you are struggling to get interviews, I would not instantly skip a role just because it requires a cover letter. With ChatGPT it shouldn't take you too long to write a quality cover letter.
- Seek out specific careeapplication advice. If you find someone who knows what they are talking about, this is an invaluable resource. There are many subreddits on Reddit that offer such a service for free.
- Don't sleep on hybrid roles. I know hybrid roles can get a bad rep on this subreddit, but I wanted to offer another perspective. There are many hybrid roles that are basically remote in that they require an in-office presence very rarely. One of my new Js was advertised as hybrid when it's actually remote. I am only required to be in the office once every three months, if that. It is also possible to OE with hybrid roles, but that is a post for another day.
- If you are new to OE and want to start out, consider roles in the non-profit/charity sector. Whilst they do not pay as well as the private sector, non-profits are often always looking for more staff. On a broader point, if you are not doing so already, now is a good time to diversity your industries. This does not mean picking up extra qualifications so you can OE (something I personally would not advise), but it means doing the same role across industries. For example, being a software engineer in finance and in the non-profit sector. Another bonus of spreading industries is that it reduces the chances of you getting busted.
- Don't apply to jobs that have been listed for more than a week. I only apply to jobs that have been posted within the last few days, especially on sites like Indeed that is known for having false job postings. The longer a job has been advertised, the less likely it is actually 'live'.
I hope these tips are helpful! I will add to this post if I think of any more - feel free to add your own tips below too!

2023.03.22 16:22 very_452001 Questions on Inscribed Ordinals
Hi,
Only people who run Full Bitcoin Nodes get to download over half a million created Ordinals so far? If so how TB's of hard drive space is required as it sounds so big in size. Also has the half a million ordinals created so far surpassed normal btc transactions since 2009 in terms of hard drive space to store them?
If bigger hard drive space is required to run a full node and hard drives do not get cheaper over time then will this make bitcoin less decentralized?
Do Ordinals require btc miners to use more electricity as normal?
Okay all these over half a million Inscribed Ordinals that have been created and released so far, are they all on the Main Bitcoin base layer blockchain, or are some of them are on Layer 2's like Lightning Network or Stacks? Why does Stacks have its own coin token where as Lightning Network doesn't?
Finally lets say Bitcoin prices goes up or in the future 1 btc = $1million each, at this stage how the hell people suppose Inscribe Ordinals to the main bitcoin base layer when fees are going to be super expensive, they be forced to Inscribe mint on Layer 2 Lighting Network instead if they want cheaper fees but these Ordinals wont be classed as True Bitcoin Ordinals because they are not on the main bitcoin base layer so will these Layer 2 Ordinals have a different catalogue numbering system for them to distinguish them from the official Bitcoin Ordinals?
Cheers,

2023.03.22 16:13 Xwomen23 Seeking advice: Short term disability due to Mental Health reasons
Hi All,
Apologies to bring this topic at personal finance subreddit. I was unable to find a relevant subreddit and feel free to redirect as necessary. Writing this to understand what my options are.
Background: I am 36 YO working female and going through bouts of anxiety and depression for the past few months. I am an immigrant in Canada and do not have family (other than my spouse) here. The reason for this depression seems to be the issue with endometriosis which has largely gone untreated and unrecognized in Canada and unsuccessful fertility treatments IVF and IUI over past few years (not recent). All this has caused me to lead a dull life and I am unable to focus on work and house. This has also caused me and my spouse to drift apart in relationship to an extent. My family health practitioner knows about most of the above things and recognize this as an issue.
Current situation: I am thinking to take a short career break (few months) due to the above-mentioned reasons. However, I really need to be close to my maternal family (not in Canada) and also explore treatment options there. Healthcare in my country is faster if you can pay for it and being closer to my family would bring the required support structure. The past few days have been terrible, and I have been unable to sleep for most days. I need this break sooner than I thought as it has been difficult to get up and think about anything else.
Request for advice: I want to understand from anyone who may know or have come across such situations or have been managing such cases from HR or insurance standpoint.
· I understand I may be able to apply for short term disability under mental health reasons, but what is the maximum duration that the employer’s insurance provider may approve. Also, I know this is a grey area but would I be eligible for this even if I travel outside Canada. I have no intention of hiding this from my employeinsurance provider.
· Also, endometriosis is a known medical condition and may not be covered under pre-existing condition clause. I understand this is a complex issue with not much awareness around it relating to how it can impact patients’ life. (
Link)
· I would like to go ahead with my plan with or without short term disability approval from insurance provider at a loss of pay. Is anyone aware if I have rights in term of employment protection? Basically, I would still have a job if I return in 3-6 months and not be terminated. I have been with the employed for ~ 1 year.
Thanks for patiently reading through this. Writing this at a 4 Am sleepless round. Will post in the morning. Any advice or feedback is highly appreciated.

2023.03.22 16:11 kenshion072 Can you link some cool concepts you've done?
I'm doing a photoshoot soon; I'm looking for ideas to pitch. This will be less editorial and more lifestyle type shoot. I want to portray quiet luxury, elegant, and chic. I am a man, so I would love to see if anyone has anything like this with men. Feel free to share any links that you're proud of even outside the scope I mentioned. I would love to be able to draw inspiration for my shoot. Thanks.

2023.03.22 16:09 PhotojournalistGlum7 Gpt-3 Powered Storytelling Storytime Sam
Hi everyone,
As a homeschooling parent, I always struggle to satisfy my child’s appetite for new stories and encourage their imagination. I recently created an app called Storytime Sam that uses chatGPT-like AI to create stories for children based on any prompt you give it. Storytime Sam is great way to foster your child’s creativity, reading, and writing skills!
The app encourages a child's creativity and reading and writing practices by bringing their imagination to life through text. It offers an interactive storytime experience where children can create their own stories with Storytime Sam. The app makes it easy for children to create a truly unique story just by talking to Sam (via text) and telling him what they want to change about the story they just created. It's like having a friend who is always ready to listen to your ideas and help bring them to life.
Storytime Sam also includes a "Story Room" where you can find curated stories donated by other parents to get your creative juices flowing. It's a great source of inspiration and can help kickstart your own storytelling ideas.
Give Storytime Sam a try if you're looking for a fun and educational app to incorporate into your homeschooling routine. It encourages a child's imagination and creativity while also helping them develop their reading and writing skills. Storytime Sam was reviewed by an independent Teacher and was approved for educational use. So you know it’s safe. You get 10 free coins each day where each coin roughly equates to one story. Let me know if you've tried it out and what you think!
You can read more about it here:
