2023.05.30 13:27 bigbear0083 (5/30) Tuesday's Pre-Market Stock Movers & News
Good morning traders and investors of the StockMarketChat sub! Welcome to the new trading week and a fresh start! Here are your pre-market stock movers & news on this Tuesday, May the 30th, 2023-
Stock futures rose Tuesday after the Biden administration and Republican lawmakers reached a tentative deal on raising the U.S. debt ceiling.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 91 points, or 0.3%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.6%. Nasdaq-100 futures climbed 1.2%.
President Joe Biden and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy reached an agreement to raise the debt ceiling and avoid a default over the weekend, with Congress set to vote on the legislation as early as Wednesday. Lawmakers have not signaled that they intended to return to Capitol Hill early to work on the deal. Both Republican and Democratic support is needed for the bill agreement to pass.
“Although the upcoming votes in Congress still pose a small risk, the main risk had been that political pressures would prevent a deal from coming together,” wrote Goldman Sachs economists in a note. “Now that a deal has been reached, it seems very likely to pass both chambers of Congress in the coming week.”
The agreement comes just days before the so-called “X date” on June 5, which is the earliest date the Treasury Department has signaled the U.S. could default on debt obligations. The initial compromise was first announced on Saturday evening.
The long negotiations between the White House and congressional leaders raised concern among investors that a default on U.S. debt could take place. Wall Street has already contended with persistent inflation and a banking crisis this year.
Stocks closed higher on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 finished last week with gains. The market was closed Monday due to Memorial Day.
Investors will also turn their attention to May jobs data out on Friday, while the April Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics will be released on Wednesday. Corporate earnings from HP Inc and Salesforce are due on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

2023.05.30 06:00 nomad_Henry Exploring the Advantages of Living in the UK versus the USA from an Immigrant's Perspective
I came to the UK as an international student and have been living here for almost 18 years now. I am now a naturalized citizen. I have worked in both the USA and the UK for several years. I started my own business in the UK, and it has been successful. However, my family attempted to build a furniture business in the USA 10 years ago, but unfortunately, it did not work out. On the other hand, my wife attended an Ivy League university and worked at Goldman Sachs at NYC for a few years. Although I genuinely love the USA and acknowledge that it offers unique opportunities, I would like to share some perspectives on immigrating to the UK and learn more about America as well.
TL;DR: The USA is advantageous for making money, while the UK offers a more stable and family-friendly lifestyle.
What does the UK do better than the USA? - Safety: Violent crimes are rare, and I personally haven't witnessed any in my 18 years here. The country is considered fairly safe to live in.
- Public healthcare: The UK has decent and free healthcare. My son frequently uses the National Health Service (NHS), which is sufficient for basic health needs. Whenever needed, we simply call the nearest health clinic, and my son can get same-day doctor appointments with good quality service. For instance, when my son had an epileptic fit, we called an ambulance, and the medics arrived within 10 minutes.
- Politics: The UK has a slightly better political climate, being more progressive and less extreme compared to the USA. Unlike the USA, the UK doesn't have news media outlets like Fox News or Newsmax, nor politicians like Marjorie Taylor Greene.
- Better work-life balance and workers' rights: The UK provides more job security, more holidays (25 days paid leave is the norm), and better workers' rights, although the pay may be lower.
- Centralized government system: The UK's centralized government ensures that all public services are available in one place through a well-designed government website called Gov.UK. It simplifies tasks such as paying taxes and claiming benefits. In contrast, the US system is fragmented between the federal government and states, and often features poorly designed and outdated websites (although this information is based on my wife's experience until she left the US in 2015, so it may have changed).
- Robust welfare system: The UK subsidizes university education, with the maximum tuition fee capped at £9,000 per year (it was £4,000 when I attended university). Additionally, there are numerous programs to support lower-income families. I have a child, and I receive child benefits, free nursery for up to 30 hours per week.
- Proximity to Europe: Being closer to Europe, the UK offers convenient holiday destinations in Europe and Africa.
- Smaller country with higher population density: The UK's smaller size and higher population density make it easier to visit family and friends. I appreciate this closeness, as I often travel to different parts of the UK for business, and it can all be done in a day.
- Better public services and transportation: The UK boasts better public services and public transportation systems compared to the USA.
- Immigration system: The UK has a more immigrant-friendly immigration system. Qualifying for permanent residence status in the UK requires working for five years, without any quotas or lotteries.
- More culture and tradition as the UK is an old European country.
What does the USA do better than the UK? - More opportunities for making money: The USA is a global hub for high-tech and financial services, providing abundant well-paid job opportunities that surpass the UK. As an example, during my time working for an American tech company, an American consulting firm, my US colleagues earned 30-40% more than I did. This pay disparity has likely increased due to the current strength of the USD and the Sterling has lost so much value over the years.
- Natural beauty and diverse landscapes: The US offers an array of beautiful and diverse landscapes, which is one of my favourite aspects of America. I have fond memories of living in Orange County, CA, with its proximity to several beaches, year-round sunny weather, mountains, and valleys. These options are not as readily available in the UK.
- Larger houses: Houses in the UK tend to be small and expensive compared to the USA.
- Perceived upward mobility: The US is often perceived as having more opportunities for upward mobility, as it lacks a rigid class system traditionally seen in the UK. The country's history of being built by immigrants contributes to a more flexible class structure.
- Better economic prospect than the UK in the longer term. Being the only superpower in the world, US simply has more resources to work with than the UK. I invest mostly in US companies and I do believe it has a brighter future than the UK
- Lower taxes and fewer regulations. Value-added tax in the UK is 20%, in the US is 8-9%.
I have lived in many countries and no country is perfect. Each country offers different things and can be great depending on what you are looking for. I am in my late 30 now and I am looking to retire this year. I don't find living in the UK or US appealing, as both countries are money-sinking holes. I am moving to South East Asia for a more relaxed, basic and cheaper lifestyle.

2023.05.30 04:15 Jealous-Daikon-2106 Need advice!
Hello everyone, I am a HS graduate about to start college and my goal is to get into Investment Banking during college (preferably at a BB like Goldman Sachs) but I’m in a bit of a pickle. I don’t have the best HS GPA now. The only choices I have for college are CC and guaranteed transfer to UVA (which I know is a target) or The University of Kansas and probably try to transfer out as a junior (soph transfer wouldn’t work because of my low HS GPA). I was about to pick CC to UVA but I don’t transfer until junior year (I know IB recruiting is during sophomore year and I would still be at a CC). It would the be pointless to attend a target if IB recruiting is already done. With all this, I don’t know it I should commit to CC to UVA or KU as a freshman. I know it’s hard to get into IB from CC so I think KU would be optimal as it’s a 4 year but what do you think?

2023.05.29 23:26 Logical_Cellist_3472 George W Bush is the worst president America has ever had. Hear me out
I decided to make this post since I have seen that people all over the media now see GW Bush as some sort of hero. He's not. He's a war criminal and had an awful presidency. Even worse than Trump's.
Before I go in to why, I will state, I acknowledge the wrongdoings of past presidents and how they could be seen as worse. Trump with attempting a coup, A. Johnson undoing reconstruction, Pierce and "bleeding kansas". These are all really bad and am not excusing those. Those are still some of the worst presidents. But here are my reasons for George W. Bush being the worst president we ever had.
- Torture - George W Bush literally had his officials torture INNOCENT civilians at Guantanamo Bay. These techniques included waterboarding, sleep deprivation, loud noises, forced nudity & sensory deprivation. The worst part is that most (if not all) of these people were innocent and committed no crimes. Anyone who can justify torture to themselves is a sociopath.
- Iraq War - Don't think this needs much explaining. This war was illegal and offensive against a country who did not attack us nor did they have weapons of mass destruction. This war was built on lies that Blair and Bush made saying they had access to intelligence data (which they never had) saying there was a "massive stockpile". Bush, Cheney & Blair all lied about it and got MINIMUM 250,000 innocent Iraqi citizens. People are gonna say "oh people believed them so it's not a lie". Either those people who believed it were duped or were just straight up lying. And if you don't believe they were lying, why did they keep changing their answers? First they said Saddam Hussein had connections to 9/11, then they had WMDS, when proven wrong they said "we need to fight terrorists", then they said "Saddam didn't treat his citizens well. Pretty fucking suspicious if you ask me. Anyone who wants to tell me this war was justified can fuck off. There is no justification for this war and you know that.
- Response to Hurricane Katrina - Of course, Hurricane Katrina isn't his fault that is ridiculous. But his response was bullshit. He took too long to visit the area affected since he was on vacation. He did not provide nor help enough with the issue and was completely unprepared. As well as took no accountability.
- NCLB (No Child Left Behind) - NCLB was widely unsuccessful and still left a wide gap between student's academic abilities. Which the point of it was to improve students ability and standards. It did not create higher standards for public school students. It made it so schools could only be funded based on standardized testing. And it brought down a lot of kid's educational potential. Failure with a capital F. Here is the article talking about the absolute failure it is.
- Economic Recession - The great recession of 2008 is one the worst economic downturns our country had ever faced. Now some people will say "oh it was Bill Clinton's fault". They aren't entirely wrong. Clinton did deregulation and the repeal of Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. So there was always gonna be a recession. But Bush made it worse. He gave gigantic tax cuts that pretty much only benefitted the wealthy (the 1%). He also pursued tons of deregulation in the financial industry (such as the Federal Reserve for an example) and the Housing Industry which led to the subprime mortgage crisis. He also gave bailouts to tons of big banks (such as JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs). This all caused a HUGE economic downturn.
There is a lot more but it would honestly take a long time to write it all. Of course, he may have had SOME achievements. Such as medicare part D and PEPFAR which were both fairly successful. But even then, every president has done SOME good. Even the worst of the worst. These are my reasonings for George W Bush being the worst president in American history. You could maybe make the case he's the 4th worst because of Johnson, Pierce and Buchanan. But personally, I see him as the #1 worst.

2023.05.29 06:03 rotundfire Just cashed out ~$10M. Should I add alts to my portfolio?
My company made it big a few months ago, and I cashed out almost $10M in long-term capital gains with a high likelihood of earning $5-10M/yr for the next few years.
I had already saved up a few million. All invested in index funds. I figured I would just buy more index funds, and plan to do that with the majority of this windfall. However, after talking with a couple financial advisors and reading up a bit on typical HNW asset allocations (Tiger 21's report and Goldman Sach's family office report) I'm wondering whether I should be investing some fraction in alternatives. It seems that typical portfolio includes 20-30% in alts.
Anyone have direct experience investing in alts through an RIA or private bank? My pessimistic side says the 2 and 20 fee, plus 1-2% origination fee isn't worth it. But the fact that HNW portfolios tend to have a significant alts allocation makes me wonder whether the advisors I've talked to are telling the truth about there being a 3-5% net-of-fees return premium for the illiquidity of private markets.
*edit* thanks for the input everyone! I think I'll stick with index funds and call it a day.
