This has been eating at me so I thought I’d get some opinions.
So yesterday I was flying from Europe back to the US. Upon lining up to board, they weighed each of our carry-on bags to ensure they were under 10kg/22lbs. None of us were prepared for this, didn’t realize there even was a weight limit and MANY of us were over (most by only 1-2kg) They informed us that we would have to check any bags above this weight AND pay them $125 to do so. This obviously made people quite upset. So there are probably 30-40 people gathered around one woman with a credit card scanner and we were not allowed forward without paying. I witnessed so many people in distress, couples who were having to do math to figure out which of their credit cards had enough balance, and younger adults freaking out because it wasn’t in their budget/they didn’t have the money.
This got me heated. I know when I was younger this would be quite a significant amount of money for me, especially unplanned.
Why I might be the AH: I first decided to try and argue/negotiate (along with everyone else) but we were just making it take longer for everyone. I was so frustrated and wanted to do something. I went up to the man actually weighing the bags and said in a quiet voice (so he might think I was embarrassed) and asked “what does somebody do if they can’t afford it?” I technically did NOT lie by saying I couldn’t afford it, but obviously implied it. This was on purpose He stumbled a bit and then just let me through. I was 1.5kg over weight.
I could afford it. I just hated the principle and was thinking about younger me and was upset.
*To be fair - the weight requirement was in the terms we all signed, but many (including me) did not notice — that’s on us. But our carry ons were not weighed leaving the US with the same airline so everyone was quite surprised. *
I feel like if these rules were to be enforced there should be highly visible scales before going through security to allow the tools to prevent this from happening. Otherwise we are just guessing yes? I also feel like the $125 charge should be more visible, as many of us are used to having a bag checked for free if the airplane is full, etc.
I mostly feel bad for “cheating” the process (and not sharing my plan with anyone else), but I feel like it is a ridiculous predatory policy and wanted to take a stand.

EDIT: the cost to check a bag before the gate was $90 or so. If more people were aware of the enforcement or able to weigh their bags, they would have saved $35. That is not to say it isn’t our fault for not reading fine print.
OTHER IMPORTANT EDIT!!! The weight was everything we were carrying. Personal items, backpacks, etc. people had to empty their water bottles to try and get the weight down

Town and Country Planning Act 1990 is amended as follows.
(2) For section (1B), substitute—
(1B) In Wales, the local planning authority for a county or a county borough is the local planning board established by the Welsh Planning Agency for the county or county borough.
Welsh Planning Agency 2 Welsh Planning Agency (1) The Welsh Planning Agency is established.
(2) It is a body corporate.
(3) Schedule 1 makes further provision about the Welsh Planning Agency.
Local planning boards 3 Local planning boards (1) The Welsh Planning Agency must establish bodies called local planning boards in accordance with this section.
(2) There must be one local planning board for each county and county borough.
(3) Each local planning board is to be established by order made by the Welsh Planning Agency for an area within Wales.
(4) The area for which a local planning board is established must not coincide or overlap with the area of any other local planning board.
(5) The Welsh Planning Agency must ensure that, at all times on and after the appointed day, the areas of local planning boards together cover the whole of Wales.
(6) An order establishing a local planning board must provide for the constitution of the board, either by setting out the constitution or by making provision by reference to a published document where it is set out.
(7) The Welsh Planning Agency must publish orders under this section.
(8) In this section “the appointed day” means a day appointed under this subsection by regulations made by the Welsh Ministers.
(9) Schedule 2 makes further provision about local planning boards.
Final provisions 4 Commencement (1) This Act comes into force 1 year after Royal Assent.
5 Short title (1) This Act may be known as the Planning (Welsh Planning Agency and Local Planning Boards) (Wales) Act 2023.
SCHEDULES
SCHEDULE 1
WELSH PLANNING AGENCY
Appointment of members 1 (1)The Welsh Planning Agency is to consist of—
(a) a member appointed by the Welsh Ministers to chair the Welsh Planning Agency, and
(b) other members appointed by the Welsh Ministers.
(2) The Welsh Ministers may appoint a person as a member only if the Senedd Cymru has approved the appointment.
(3) In appointing members, the Welsh Ministers must have regard, among other things, to the desirability of ensuring that the membership (taken as a whole) has expertise or experience in—
(a) law relating to planning,
(b) housing policy,
(c) planning policy, and
(d) other matters which the Welsh Ministers consider relevant to planning and housing.
(4) A member is appointed for such period not exceeding 4 years as the Welsh Ministers determine.
(5) The Welsh Ministers may reappoint a person as a member if—
(a) the person—
(i) is a member at the time of reappointment, or
(ii) ceased to be a member not more than 3 months before the date of reappointment, and
(b) the person has not previously been reappointed.
(6) Sub-paragraphs (2) and (4) apply to the reappointment of a person as a member as they apply to the appointment of a person as a member.
(7) The Welsh Ministers may determine other terms and conditions of membership in relation to matters not covered by this Act.
Persons who may not be members 2 (1) The Scottish Ministers may not appoint a person as a member if sub-paragraph (2) or (4) applies to the person.
(2) This sub-paragraph applies to a person who is—
(a) a member of—
(i) the Scottish Parliament,
(ii) the House of Commons,
(iii) the House of Lords,
(iv) Senedd Cymru, or
(v) the Northern Ireland Assembly,
(b)a member of the Welsh Government,
(c) a Minister of the Crown,
(d) an office-holder in the Welsh Administration,
(e) an office-holder of the Crown in right of Her Majesty’s Government in the United Kingdom,
(f) the holder of any other relevant elective office as defined by paragraph 1(8) of schedule 7 of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000,
(g) a civil servant.
(3) Sub-paragraph (2) does not apply to a person who is a councillor or an employee of a local authority.
(4) This sub-paragraph applies to a person who is or has been—
(a) insolvent,
(b) disqualified as a company director under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986,
(c) disqualified as a charity trustee under the Charities Act 2011,
(d) disqualified under a disqualification provision analogous to either of those mentioned in paragraphs (b) and (c) anywhere in the world.
(4) For the purpose of sub-paragraph (3)(a), a person is or has been insolvent if—
(a) the person’s estate is or has been sequestrated,
(b) the person has granted a trust deed for creditors or has made a composition or arrangement with creditors,
(c) the person is or has been the subject of any other kind of arrangement analogous to either of those mentioned in paragraphs (a) and (b) anywhere in the world.
Members’ remuneration and expenses 3 (1)The Welsh Planning Agency may pay—
(a) its members, and
(b) the members of any local planning board established by it, such remuneration as it may, with the approval of the Scottish Ministers, determine.
(2) The Welsh Planning Agency may pay—
(a) its members, and
(b) the members of any local planning board established by it, such sums as it may, with the approval of the Scottish Ministers, determine in respect of expenses incurred by them in performing their functions.
Early termination of membership 4 (1) A person’s membership of the Welsh Planning Agency ends if—
(a) the person gives notice in writing to the Welsh Ministers and the Llywydd of the Senedd that the person resigns,
(b) the person becomes disqualified from being a member,
(c) the Welsh Ministers give the person notice in writing that the person is removed from being a member.
(2) The Welsh Ministers may remove a member under sub-paragraph (1)(c) only if—
(a) the member has been absent, without permission or reasonable excuse, from meetings of the Welsh Planning Agency for a period of longer than 3 consecutive months,
(b) the member has been convicted of a criminal offence, or
(c) the Welsh Ministers consider that the member is—
(i) unable to perform the member’s functions, or
(ii) unsuitable to continue as a member.
(3) Where they propose to give a person, other than the person who is the member appointed to chair the Welsh Planning Agency, notice under sub-paragraph (1)(c) that the person is to be removed from being a member, the Welsh Ministers must consult the member appointed to chair the Welsh Planning Agency.
(4) The Welsh Ministers may remove a member under sub-paragraph (1)(c) only with the approval of the Senedd Cymru.
(5) For the purpose of sub-paragraph (1)(b), a person becomes disqualified from being a member if paragraph 3(2) or (4) applies to the person.
Chief executive and other staff 5 (1) The Welsh Planning Agency is to have, as a member of staff, a chief executive.
(2) The chief executive may not be a member of the Welsh Planning Agency.
(3)The Welsh Ministers are to appoint the first chief executive with the approval of the Senedd Cymru.
(4) The Welsh Planning Agency is to appoint each subsequent chief executive.
(5) The Welsh Planning Agency may appoint other staff.
(6) The chief executive and other staff are to be appointed on such terms and conditions as the Welsh Planning Agency, with the approval of the Welsh Ministers, determines.
Authority to perform functions 6 (1) The Welsh Planning Agency may authorise—
(a) any of its members,
(b) any local planning board established by it,
(c) its chief executive, or
(d) any other member of its staff, to perform such of its functions (and to such extent) as it may determine.
(2) The giving of authority under sub-paragraph (1) to perform a function does not—
(a) affect the Welsh Planning Agency’s responsibility for the performance of the function, or
(b) prevent the Welsh Planning Agency from performing the function itself.
Regulation of procedure 7 The Welsh Planning Agency may regulate its own procedure (including quorum) and that of any local planning board.
Validity of things done 8 The validity of anything done by the Welsh Planning Agency or a local planning board is not affected by—
(a) a vacancy in membership,
(b)a defect in the appointment of a member,
(c) the disqualification of a person from being a member after appointment.
General powers 9 The Welsh Planning Agency may do anything which appears to it—
(a) to be necessary or expedient for the purposes of, or in connection with, the performance of its functions, or
(b) to be otherwise conducive to the performance of its functions.
Annual report 10 (1) The Welsh Planning Agency must, as soon as practicable after the end of each financial year—
(a) prepare and publish a report on its activities during that year,
(b) send a copy of the report to the Welsh Ministers, and
(c) lay a copy of the report before the Senedd Cymru.
(2) It is for the Welsh Planning Agency to determine the form and content of each report.
Ministerial direction 11 (1) The Welsh Ministers may direct the Welsh Planning Agency to exercise its powers in a specified way.
(2) A direction under subsection (1) must—
(a) be in writing, and
(b) be published (as soon as practicable after it is communicated to the Welsh Planning Agency), and
(c) set out the Welsh Ministers’ reasons for making it.
(3) The Welsh Ministers may revise or revoke a direction under subsection (1).
(6) Subsection (3) applies to the revision or revocation of a direction under subsection (1) as it applies to such a direction.
Resources 12 (1) The Welsh Ministers must seek to ensure that the amount of resources allocated for use by the Welsh Planning Agency is reasonably sufficient to enable it to perform its functions.
(2) Each report prepared under paragraph 11 must include an assessment by the Welsh Planning Agency of whether the amount of resources allocated for use by it in the financial year to which the report relates was sufficient to enable it to perform its functions.
(3) Sub-paragraph (2) does not affect the generality of paragraph 11(2).
SCHEDULE 2
LOCAL PLANNING BOARDS
1 (1) Local planning boards are to consist of members appointed by the council of the county or county borough (“the council”) which the local planning board’s area covers.
Early termination of membership
2 (1) A person’s membership of a local planning board ends if—
(a) the person gives notice in writing to the council and the Welsh Planning Agency that the person resigns,
(b) the person becomes disqualified from being a member,

(2) The council may remove a member under sub-paragraph (1)(c) only if—

(2) In exercising its powers, a local planning board must have regard to the National Development Framework for Wales.

This bill overhauls the planning process by delegating the planning responsibilities of councils to new local planning boards under the direction of a new national planning agency, the Welsh Planning Agency, modelled off the Scottish Housing Agency I introduced in Scotland through the Planning (Scotland) Act 2022. By creating a new agency for housing and planning, we can ensure that house building is getting the priority it needs to solve Wales’ housing crisis, and to ensure that local “Not In My Backyard” councillors cannot block housing developments for no good reason.
The members of the Welsh Planning Agency will be formed of members nominated by the Welsh government and approved (or rejected) by the Senedd. The local planning boards, of which there will be one for each principal authority, will in turn be formed of members nominated by the local council and approved (or rejected) by the Welsh Planning Agency. This will ensure that local planning boards retain an element of local control and local representation while also ensuring that NIMBY sentiment isn’t represented on local planning boards, helping fix Wales’ shortage of housing.

In Aug of 2021 I (27f) signed a 12 month lease with a friend (24f). After a few weeks, she left the apartment saying she wanted to visit her mom who was unwell and that she'd return later. Later, she revealed she had no intention to return and simply felt the apartment wasn't "up to her standard of living" and that she didn't want to be in an LDR with her boyfriend. In this time, she became very hostile and verbally abusive. We also have a romantic history prior to this in which she manipulated me s*xually while I was high, and she used this to relentlessly taunt and torment me.
As I was left to deal with the lease, she refused to have any proper communication. Whenever I tried, she'd get angry and tell me to back off and leave her alone. She'd promise to keep paying rent then change her mind. She eventually stopped paying entirely. When she stopped paying, she told me that she'd file a harassment suit against me giving id been contacting her excessively. I take full responsibility for contacting her too excessively when she wanted space, but it was always in the context of needing her to communicate about some issue regarding the lease and finances. She later told me she didn't actually mean it.
We didn't speak for a few months. We had one call where she came at me blaming me for her boyfriend breaking up with her. After that call I messaged her a few times to make sure she was okay because she seemed unwell on the phone. About a month after, I asked her to resolve some issues with our WiFi and energy bill as the bills were still coming out to her name. She blocked me so I called her from a restricted number repeatedly which I also deeply regret. I gave up and spent months battling with the companies to get her name removed since she wouldn't call them herself.
At one point, I decided to go to small claims court to recover the unpaid rent as I was tired that she'd abandoned the lease and all her belongings in the apartment and refused to pay her share. I sent her a letter explaining she could go to the landlord to have him remove her from the lease, otherwise I'd have to take her to small claims over the rent. I emphasized my priority was just removing her name and would only use courts as a last resort. (This is what I was instructed to do by a lawyer). We had a short text message conversation in which she verbally abused me, saying somethings which were homophobic slurs, amongst other insults. She later apologized but then stated she had obtained legal advice and knew she could pursue a harassment suit against me. I was confused and never spoke to her again. But to one of my friends she said that she was considering filing a restraining order. I was confused because this person lies a lot so I couldn't tell if they were empty threats or not. She later contacted me and all of my friends and nobody replied since we were all busy. I emailed her asking what was wrong and 2 weeks later she called me again. It was a convo about many things but she mentioned that she went to a lawyer and knew she could get a restraining order (before, she had said harassment suit).
I guess my question is, does my behavior warrant a harassment suit or restraining order? I do recognize the errors of my ways and it's something I regret so I know on a moral level I'm wrong for my actions. But on a legal level is there any basis for this? Given the nature of the calls was always something to do with the lease, bills, her verbal abuse and her sexually manipulating me. There were moments of anger where I'd insult her, but nothing extremely abusive as some things she said. This was all a while ago and the last time I spoke to her was August 2022. The last time I contacted her repeatedly was April 2022. I'm confused on the legal basis given she was in violation of a lease, and was heavily emotionally and verbally abusive, often racist, homophobic and others. To me, this is all an overdrawn cat fight and aside from the rent money, I don't see what use the courts would be. But this is also a family of immense privilege and I still worry. I changed my number so that her and her dad can't contact me as her dad had contacted me a couple times threatening to interrupt the wifi and threatened me saying he hired a lawyer for his daughter.
Edit: both times she made legal threats were in direct response to me asking her to pay her share of the rent. Many have told me this shows it was obvious retaliation against not paying the rent but I still get paranoid.

I know we may never see a season 2. However I still believe we will get at least 1 more bug patch and hopefully Firaxis would also do a balance patch since there are some dead cards / abilities in this game.
When discussing characters I assume you have unlocked all of their cards and upgraded versions.
- Hunter: Although Hunter is very strong and customisable. They have a couple of dead cards. Namely Summon Charlie, Wrath and Dark Blessing. Summon Charlie can be fixed by either Free or the two cards Charlie Draws to be free. I can't see how wrath or Dark Blessing can be fixed and should rather be replaced.
- Blade: His kit is solid. Just takes a lot to get the bleed going
- Captain America: Fits his role well.
- Captain Marvel: Drop Go Binary from 3 card plays to 2 like Morbius Bloodlust. Captain Marvel does not do nearly enough damage in her non-binary form to expect 3 card plays before she can contribute. ( I run 2 quick jabs on her to get around this limitation currently)
- Deadpool: Easy fix, En Fuego stacks per KO instead of 1 per card. This will allow a card like Quickshot+ to generate 2 En Fuego if it gets 2 kills, instead of 1 En Fuego. The rest of his kit will automatically feel better as he scales a little easier. It will also make Pain Pinata more useful as currently, I get it out of my deck as soon as possible.
- Doctor Strange: Don't even bother with Seven Suns (Heroic Card). Needs higher scaling or a higher base to be worthwhile.
- Ghost Rider: Solid kit.
- Hulk: Solid kit.
- Iron Man: No problems, very easy to use
- Magik: Same as Summon Charlie. Reinforcement needs either Free or Ally cards free. This could also be enhanced Like Doctor Strange, 4 Heroism for 1 free, 7 heroism for 2 Free cards.
- Morbius: Solid kit.
- Maybe up her card Heroism generation. She has too few good cards. When she is in the team I am redrawing her cards too often to see if I can get a more useful card. Empower is her only must-play card.
- Scarlet Witch: No more should either do more damage like 1.5 -2x or not K.O (health -1) damage.
- Spiderman: I like Spiderman's kit. Just find his heroics very expensive. I know he has fast on some cards. But paying 4 heroism for Infernal Spider and then another 3 for web throw makes it very difficult to use. This just means you are then getting basic attacks for free. I usually don't add his heroic card to my deck for this reason.
- Storm: Solid Kit
- Venom: Solid Kit
- Wolverine: Solid kit. ( I know people would like to see Wolverine a little stronger, but his cards are all viable)

A team of ursidains with sensors were the first to descend while a reported telepath came and stood next to Leslie. The Barsotti System had been a quiet ‘run’ for human travel. Unused by official travel or smugglers and, due to the lack of targets, pirates as well. Perfect for humans to use and reposition their populations as and when it was needed. The five human vessels that went missing over a period of time, however, was worth investigating now. Leslie’s wife was the fifth. The first of the humans to have had a partner when they went missing. The first to have a partner that would burn entire systems to get their significant other back. 2023.05.30 11:30 timeistheonlymoney If the only reason you worked was to afford a car to get to work, you would need more than a 30% pay increase between 2021 and today to justify going to work.
The price of cars increased by 30% give or take a little depending on various factors.
Inflation is very subjective, very particular. While the government will point to a broad and curated basket of goods to calculate general inflation, your needs may vary greatly, and are very specific to you.
For example, assume for a moment that all other needs and wants have been addressed. The recent and drastic hikes in insurance, property taxes, food, rent or houses, and everything else is no bother to you. Someone else is addressing those costs for you. Imagine your #1 reason and only reason for working is to have transportation to get to work, to afford a car to go to work to afford a car to go to work to afford a car to go to work to afford a car to go to work.
Since Jan 1, 2021 you would need for your job to pay you 30% more to justify this rat race. You would actually need even more than that because while this scenario is for simplicity in understanding inflation, there are still other factors. For example, when you work 30% more to earn more or if you did receive a 30% pay increase, you will not see a 30% increase in net income to afford that car. Instead, you will pay taxes on that income, and quite likely on the latter part of it, you will pay from a higher tax bracket. Other factors that you should not forget before you make your purchase include vehicle taxes, vehicle insurance, fuel, and maintenance. All the costs of ownership also increased and some increased at more than the rate cars themselves increased.
My point isn't so much about the price of cars, but rather that all of these economic tamperings, all of these fluctuations, make it extremely difficult to understand the value of your labor, but also the value of your earnings, and what you've earned and/or stored in terms of dollars, to make any purchases.
Edit: Now, let's have some fun. Imagine that no bank, no wealthy financier, no one will loan you money to buy a car to get to work. Instead, you must save to be able to afford to buy your next car before you current car dies. Giving your money to a banker to save it is no better than planting your earnings in a jar in the back yard or putting your dollars under your mattress. Where do you store your earnings to get a return that offsets inflation at that rate for that particular need? How much of a return do you need to get to be able to afford that next car to get to work (what rate to avoid losing purchasing power on your earnings)? And finally, how long will it take you to save what you need?
Hint: Don't forget to pay taxes on gains on your savings, which aren't really gains at all, you're just trying to break even over a period of time, to avoid losing purchasing power on your past, saved earnings.

First let me start by saying, I know that there’s no one answer to any question having to do with UA in most cases and that it varies by local.
With that being said, did you guys see a lot of overtime available during your apprenticeship (particularly years 1-3)?
I’m wanting to make a career change, and wanting to go back to being apart of a union without supervisomanagerial headaches. I left a union position in my plant to move into management and have hated it since about lunchtime on the first day. The local in my area has a phenomenal pay scale for the area once you’re at journeyman level, but they don’t publish apprenticeship %s - not sure if this is common or not.
Long story short, I plan to apply for an HVAC apprenticeship here soon - getting all of my transcripts and post secondary course paperwork in order this week. Unfortunately to start in HVAC, I would be taking a pretty significant paycut. If I started at 50% of Journeyman wage, I’ll be going down by about $13 an hour. It would be worth it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an enormous struggle up front. Essentially, I am wondering if I can expect the OT I would need to pay my bills (15-30 hours a week) during my apprenticeship, or If I will need to find a part time job on the higher paying side for my area before I would officially start the union program.
Bonus - If you’re comfortable sharing, how much do you make, where are you located, and how long have you been in the trade?

2023.05.30 10:32 Weekly-Life-Second GDPR violation in UK and EU.
In the EU and the UK, when treating user data you have to follow rules. These state that you should inform transparently the users on how their data was processed, that you have to follow a fair process, and that you can't rely on automatic system taking decisions that could affect the users legally. I think that any single disabled account, with a single alert message that is generic and does not actually explain anything (they should state what community standards were actually violated, etc.). I am afraid that they are disabling users account rather than having to admit that their systems had a security breach and notifying the users of security breaches. That is also compulsory by GDPR rules. So, rather than committing just one GDPR violation, they prefer to commit other three or four for each account that was involved in the security breach. GDPR violations, especially on this scale are sanctioned by fines. And Facebook is not new being sanctioned by the EU authorities for GDPR violations, again at a massive scale.
Suggestions: 1) sorry to inform you, but simply you can't trust Facebook to be run responsibly or depend on it for any business purposes. If you do, your business is at the mercy of imbeciles. 2) do not buy physical products that depend for their use on a Facebook account or anything related to Meta, in general. 4) There has been at least one instance of a success in taking Facebook to court, but I would consider that an exception and the economic damage suffered was minimal (10K was the recognised value of the compromised account, and probably the case succeeded because it was about disabling the account of a lawyer giving assistance to other Facebook users and owning two rather successful Facebook pages. The court decided that an average value of a Facebook account was worth around 100 euros, so this case was exceptional. I would not pay an Italian lawyer to follow the case, unless you can gladly throw money away (but, legally speaking, you would be right in sueing). 5) avoid the low-life and all those who proclaim themselves to be hackers capable of solving the case. These might even be some actual Facebook employees trying to bend the rules, and make you pay in order to give you what it is owned to you for free, but I would bet that these are the same sort of bottom feeders that profits by selling followers, use bots, and got your account disabled in the first place. They offer a quick relief to your pain, but can't deliver (and all the endorsements you see about their services are fake). 6) If you live in the UK or EU, as in general you can't proceed with the General Attorney rule, it would be probably worth filing a complaint about GDPR breaches (if I remember right, the minimum fine, per breach exceeds 60K and last fine imposed to Facebook was worth 1 billion euros). 7) If you work in tech (I do) you know what products do not rely on for user authentication, and I would say that in general, depending on social media for a product or an application is not a great idea in general and much less so if it involves Facebook. 8) The company inspires no trust in being well directed, and is loosing users, besides being considered obsolete by younger generations. The Meta 3D universe is a gigantic fiasco, everyone who attempted that in the past failed spectacularly and Meta is even technically abysmal. If you own Meta shares, I don't think they are going to gain, and I would be selling them before they fall even further. If you can, take a short position with their shares.

I [24f] felt a strong desire to become a zookeeper about halfway through college - I went in not really knowing what I wanted to do with my life, but after attending a zookeeper guest talk put on by one of the clubs and talking to them and thinking about it more I thought I finally found something I could be happy doing with my life.
It was too late to switch my major though, and I had already accepted a different internship that summer, and with how competitive the zoo field is now I knew it would be tough and possibly require some interning after graduation.
One friend I'd met around here through my inquiry into the profession (not a keeper, but has a keeper friend) was super helpful to me and my best friend to this day. She was excited to help me out, put me in touch with this farmyard animal rescue to intern at after graduation to build up a resume, and even offered to let me live with her for free and helped pay for my food/expenses after graduation till I got my first keeper job.
Well, after a lot of hard work and interviewing and despairing I finally got an offer from a large accredited zoo - the zoo her friend works at.
Now I'm 4 months into it and I'm not sure I'm cut out for this.
They have me working with penguins and seals. I was excited at first and wondered why more experienced keepers would leave those roles open for a newcomer. I soon found out why. I find fish scales in my hair and inside my clothes and boots and pockets in places I'd never think possible. The stench has gotten into my car, home, and seemingly everything I own.
It's not just that it's hard work and low pay - I expected all that. Working in the hot sun or pouring rain, heavy lifting, etc. I learned to deal with all that at the farm internship. But I feel like my love of animals has changed somehow, like I've grown to be resentful of the animals I work with for ruining my life, even though I care about them and would hate to quit and never see them again, I don't know...when I see how all the other keepers never complain and seem to love the animals unconditionally it makes me wonder if I don't belong here.
I didn't anticipate the toll that feeling disgusting 24/7 would have on my mental health. And I'm sick of hearing about how "oh there's this trick that gets it off..." I've tried all of them. None of it works. I was just hearing 2 keepers in the break room discussing this problem and one said "Oh yeah such-and-such was a game changer in keeping the car smelling fresh." Meanwhile she reeks so strongly of cat dung and urine from 10 feet away that it's making me sick. She stinks. I stink.
I kind of want to leave and pursue something else, but I do feel guilty, both for the animals and because my friend sacrificed and helped a lot to help me get here. WIBTA for throwing her efforts out the window?
