The main subject of this PhD project is multi-configurational electron structure theory and methods. The scope of the project is broad with respect to method developments. The primary goal of the project is to develop and implement improvements in multi-configurational methods. Especially the project will focus on the problems associated with removal of the one-particle basis set incompletness with explicitly correlated wave function models, limitations of the current method with respect to the number of electrons which can be handled at once, and techniques for the explicit use of the fact that electron correlation in non-metallic compounds is local. The application of multi-configurational methods to the study of enzymatic catalysis, photo chemical processes, luminescence and hydrogen gas storage is a part of the project. The application part of the project and their interpretation is of equal importance as compared to the method developments.
Qualifications:
A successful candidate should have a master of science in chemistry or physics. Limitations in the candidates CV with respect to chemistry, physics or mathematics
will be compensated for through the individual study plan established after being accepted to the project. Knowledge in developments of algorithms, numerical methods and program development are key merits. In case two candidates are judged to be equal the quality of the master thesis will be of significance. The candidate should have good communication skills, excellent grades and developed abilities in written and spoken English.
The PhD position is for a period of four years and could be extended by departmental duties at a level of at most 20 %. Further information: http://www.teknat.uu.se and http://www.pac.uu.se.

Houghton Library is the principal rare book and manuscript library of Harvard College. The Library’s holdings are particularly strong in the following areas: European, English, American, and South American literature, including the country’s pre-eminent collection of American literary manuscripts; philosophy; religion; history of science; music; printing and graphic arts; dance; and theatre. Fellows will also have access to collections in Widener Library as well as to other libraries at the University. Preference is given to scholars whose research is closely based on materials in Houghton collections, especially when those materials are unique; fellowships are normally not granted to scholars who live within commuting distance of the library. Each fellow is expected to be in residence at Houghton for at least four weeks during the period from July 2011 through June 2012 (these do not have to be consecutive weeks). The stipend for each fellowship is $3,000. Other than the Pantzer Fellowship, applicants need not apply for specific fellowships, as the Selection Committee would determine which fellowship is best suited to your research.
